Severe Cramps? - PMS Doctor

Why Do Severe Period Cramps Happen?

Period cramps, also called menstrual cramps, can be tough. If you get them every month, you know how painful and frustrating they can be. For some people, these cramps are light, but for others, they can be really severe and make it hard to do everyday things.

Why Do We Get Cramps?

Period cramps happen because your uterus (where a baby would grow) is getting ready to shed its lining. This causes muscles in the uterus to squeeze and cramp, which can hurt. Chemicals called prostaglandins make this squeezing stronger, which is why cramps can feel so intense.

How Can You Feel Better?

Here are a few simple things that can help:

Heat: A heating pad or hot water bottle on your belly can relax the muscles and ease the pain.
Pain Relievers: Medications like ibuprofen or naproxen can reduce pain and swelling. They work best if taken at the first sign of cramps.
Move Around: Gentle exercise like walking or stretching can help blood flow and reduce cramps.
Rest: Sometimes, just lying down and taking it easy can make a big difference.
Drink Water: Staying hydrated may reduce bloating, which can make cramps feel worse.
When Should You See a Doctor?
If your cramps are so bad that you can’t get out of bed or go to school/work, or if they last more than a few days, it’s a good idea to talk to a doctor. Severe cramps can be a sign of conditions like endometriosis or fibroids, which need special care.

Bottom Line

Period cramps are common, but they shouldn’t take over your life. If home remedies aren’t helping, it’s okay to ask for medical advice! Your comfort matters.
